Grandpa and Shorty

John wrote the screenplay, then composed and conducted the original score for White Ball Productions’ short film “Grandpa and Shorty“. The score consisted of 13 cues in total, and was orchestrated for string quartet, flute, French horn, and piano. Special thanks to student interns Seth Toops (Composition and Orchestration), Matthew Sterbenz (Recording and Mixing), and the Duquesne University Mary Pappert School of Music for their support of this project.

Gabriel Fauré: Requiem in Dm, Op.48
– The Scholas of Most Precious Blood Parish and the St. Gregory Institute of Sacred Music –
John’s parish schola partnered with the St. Gregory Institute for a liturgical performance of Fauré’s beloved Requiem in February of 2022. Accompanied by a 10-piece orchestra and organ, this was a rare opportunity to hear the piece performed in its original 1888 context: a Roman Catholic Traditional Latin Requiem Mass. Nicholas Will conducted the orchestra and polyphony, and John Rokosz conducted the chanted Propers of the Mass of the Dead.

Written by Charles Wood in 1920, this piece for SATB choir, solo voices, and organ was performed in April of 2017, at Franciscan University of Steubenville. John Rokosz performed the Evangelist (narrator) role as a solo tenor.

Outlaw Platoon

Inspired by the New York Times Best Selling book “Outlaw Platoon” by Captain Sean Parnell, U.S. Army. The book tells the emotional true story of a young lieutenant, newly deployed to the mountains of Afghanistan. These three pieces for solo piano were composed and transcribed in gratitude for the service of Cpt. Parnell and his men, and reflect three emotions that heavily prevail in the story: loyalty to the mission, anger and hate, and loneliness. Written and performed by John Rokosz.
